By: Alexandra Bandon , This Old House magazine Shopping List Supplies You Will Need 1. DOORS Bifold doors are available for sale, but custom-ordered doors can also be assembled into folding doors, as long as they’re resized to fit your needs. When measuring the closet opening, account for a small gap around and between the doors. Measure the horizontal opening of your doors, subtract 13/16 inch, and divide by 4 to get the individual door width. Measure vertically and subtract 2 and 7/8 inches to get its height. 2. TRACK HARDWARE The hardware that comes with bifold-door set can be flimsy. We’ve found its often best to order separate hardware—a kit that includes the track, the hinges, and all the pins and pivot plates—for a smoother, longer-lasting operation. A couple of companies, like Johnson, offer heavy-duty tracks that make the doors glide smoothly. 3. DOOR PULLS Smaller cabinet knobs will get lost on a larger door, so look for “wardrobe knobs” or any knob that is 1 and 3/4 inches or bigger in diameter. 4. 1×2 FINISH-GRADE FLAT STOCK You’ll need just one piece to create a valance under the header to hide the track. 5. 21/2-INCH TRIM SCREWS For attaching the 1×2 stock. It seems every house built since the 1950s has closets with sliding doors. Space-saving, sure, but not the best-looking—and certainly not very revealing when you’re trying to see (or reach) the goods in the middle of the closet where the doors overlap each other. Heavy bifold doors with a sturdy track, on the other hand, move effortlessly away from the center of the closet to give you a full picture of the contents inside. And because bifolds come in a wide array of profiles, they bring character to a plain opening. Replacing those hollow-core builder’s specials with a pair of weighty solid folders isn’t a huge deal; the whole assembly and installation will take you a mere Saturday afternoon. Then you’ll be rewarded with a wide-angle view when it’s time to pick out the day’s duds. Installing Folding and Sliding Doors Skill Level: Intermediate Swinging doors require that objects be set well away from the doorway if the doors are to be used, but sliding and folding doors allow furnishings to be placed closer to the opening. They can also be installed in double-width door openings to divide rooms. The following information will help you decide which doors are most appropriate for your home. Detailed installation instructions will be included with the particular doors you choose. Lowe’s is happy to provide this information as a service to you. Article Content Measuring the Opening Bypass (Sliding) Doors Bifold Doors Multifold Doors Measuring the Opening Measure the door opening in more than one place. Standard doors are 80" tall, but your door opening may be smaller than that. Measure the space before you go shopping — a door probably can be cut to fit if the opening is not standard. In a few cases you may have to place a special order for the size you need. Measure horizontally across both the top and bottom of the opening, as well as vertically on each side. When determining what size door to buy, use the smaller of each of your vertical and horizontal measurements. For example, if the left vertical measurement is 80 1/2" and the right vertical measurement is 80 1/4", use 80 1/4" for the vertical measurement when determining your door size. You may find that the door opening is not square. In that case, it will be necessary to bring it in line. This is not difficult and, unless the doorway is significantly out of square, will probably be taken care of simply by shimming and leveling the tracks used in the installation. You can cover small misalignments along the door jambs with decorative trim after you install the doors. Bypass (Sliding) Doors Bypass doors allow access to one side of the space at a time. Bypass doors work well for closets. They require no door swinging area, so there is no lost floor space. The doors may be made of wood, mirror or glass, and they are usually between 3/4" and 1 3/8" thick. Almost any door can be made into a sliding door by installing it with sliding door hardware. Bypass doors are hung from a track, which is installed below the head jam of the door opening. The track is hidden by a piece of decorative trim. Another track or guide is typically installed in the bottom of the door opening to guide the bottom of the doors. Installation of bypass doors is a simple procedure. The basic steps are: Fit and install the overhead track against the head jamb of the door opening. Use shims if necessary to level the track. Attach door rollers to the tops of the doors. The rollers, which fit within the overhead track, are adjustable so the doors will hang plumb. Install a track or a set of guides in the bottom of the door opening to keep the doors in line. Hang the doors from the overhead track. Adjust the tracking guides on the bottom of the doors to straddle the bottom track, preventing the doors from swinging inward or outward. Or fit the doors inside a bottom track or a set of floor-mounted guides: First set the doors inside the track or guides, and are then lift them and hang them from the top track. (Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.) Install decorative trim to cover both the hardware and any misalignment of the doors and jambs. Bifold Doors Bifold doors let you access both sides of the closet together. Bifold doors are ideal for situations in which you need access to the full width of the door opening — in a laundry closet, for example. These doors come in a variety of styles, including plain, raised-panel, louvered and mirrored varieties. Installation of bifold doors is simple and, in general, involves the following steps: Install the top track first. Install the bottom track on the floor directly below the top track. (Some bifold doors may not use a bottom track.) Install the doors by first putting the bottom pivot point into the lower track socket. Then put the top pivot point into the top pivot socket. Usually the top pivot point is spring loaded. To install, retract the pivot point, place it into position, and release it. Position the upper and lower sliding guides in the track channels. Space the panels evenly and fit them to the door opening by adjusting the track sockets. Raise or lower the panels by adjusting the height of the lower pivot pin. Multifold Doors Multifold doors are useful as temporary room dividers. Multifold doors are made of narrow panels that fold like an accordion. The panels may be made from wood, plastic or fabric. When closed, these doors resemble paneling or vertical blinds. When open, they take up little space. These doors are generally thin, and they do not usually provide much sound insulation. However, they are easy to install and can even be mounted along ceilings, making them convenient for use as privacy dividers between rooms or to close off spaces. Multifold doors hang from rollers that run inside a track along the ceiling or door opening head jam. Specific installation instructions will vary with the type of door you purchase. Bifold door (Buy) Carpenter’s pencil (Buy) Drill (Buy) Level (Buy) Plumb bob or plummet (Buy) Screwdriver (Buy) Wood block (Buy) Click to enlarge + Step 1: Measure for the new doors Start by measuring the height and width of the door opening. Doors are typically 80 inches tall but can be cut down to fit. Make sure to read the instructions that came with the door before you begin. Measure the width and height of the door opening. Click to enlarge + Step 2: Install the header track Center the track in the top of the opening. Mark the screw holes with a pencil. Some two-door sets have a track for each door, which you will need to line up along the casing. Use a drill bit one size smaller than the installation screws to make pilot holes where the screws will go. Line up the header rack and screw it in place. Center the header track in the top opening and mark the screw locations with a pencil. Click to enlarge + Step 3: Set the pivot brackets in place Follow the installation guidelines as you slide the pivot brackets into place within the header track, setting them 1/4 inch away from the door frame. Use a plumb bob to set the bottom pivot bracket in place directly below the top bracket. Slide the pivot brackets along the header track until they are 1/4 inch away from the frame. Click to enlarge + Step 4: Installing lower pivot brackets on a carpeted floor Wall-to-wall carpeting is not sturdy enough to support the lower pivot bracket for a bifold door so you will need to install a wooden pad for bracing. First, use a plumb blob to line up the location for the pad and the lower bracket centered on top with the pivot bracket at the top of the door frame. Mark the location of the bracket on the pad and the location of the wooden pad on the carpet. Using a utility knife, cut away the carpet and pad under the location for the wood support. Fit the wood support into the hole and secure it to the floor underneath with a wood screw. Install the pivot bracket on top of the wood block, double checking its position with a plumb bob, marking and drilling pilot holes, and screwing it in place. Use a plumb bob to mark the location for the lower bracket. Click to enlarge + Step 5: Insert the guide pins and adjustable pivots Insert the nylon guide pins in the holes at the top of the door. Gently tap them into the holes with a hammer. On the bottom of the door are pre-drilled holes for the adjustable pivots. Insert them into the holes and tap them into place. The nylon guide pins fit into pre-drilled holes in the top of the door. Click to enlarge + Step 6: Hang the doors Hang the bifold doors in the track by folding them in half and fitting the guide pin in the upper track. Next, lift the door to fit the adjustable pivots into the pivot brackets at the bottom of the door. Insert the guide pin into the hole in the header track. Click to enlarge + Step 7: Position the lower pivot Set the pivot out 1/4 inch from the door frame so that the door will have room to swing. Make the same adjustment on both sides. The pivot can be screwed tighter or looser to adjust the height of the door and help you align the doors. Set the lower pivot out 1/4 inch from the door jamb. Click to enlarge + Step 8: Set the doorknobs Mark the position for the doorknobs in the middle of the edge piece, at a comfortable height from the floor. Drill a hole that is the size of the door fastener. Make sure the hole goes through the door completely. From the back side of the door, insert the screw to hold the doorknob. Attach the knob to the screw and tighten by turning. Mark the location for the doorknob in the middle of the edge piece at a comfortable height off the floor. Click to enlarge + Step 9: Install alignment brackets With four-section bifold doors, alignment brackets are installed on the back side of the doors, 18 inches off the floor, to keep the doors aligned when they are closed.
